Keeping your hair healthy and strong can be a tedious business, which we’d often rather ignore than tackle (myself included!).
It’s easy to take hair for granted, but your scalp and hair strands require at least some attention. Even the best haircut won’t look its best if your hair is in a terrible state. Now – the list of hair problems men face is endless – from breakage to hair loss.
The good thing is that there are ways to help the situation – such as getting tips from people who know what they’re on about! We’ve gathered top 10 expert hair care tips that’ll help you give your hair the care it desperately needs. Here they are:
#1.Wash Hair Less Often
This is a classic piece of advice – but not many people do as told. The more you wash your hair, the dryer the strands and scalp. Your hair’s natural oils are there to condition it all – but if you shampoo every day, you strip these oils away. Do yourself a favour and cut back. If you can’t go a day without washing your hair – at least skip the shampoo.
#2.Be Gentle With Your Hair
Forget vigorously rubbing your hair with a towel – that’s like wishing your hair would break and die. Wet hair is more vulnerable to damage and can break more easily, so dry it gently – don’t rub it. Pat drying is the way to go.
#3.Brush Hair More Often
We all know that chaps get lazy with brushing – I certainly don’t do it enough. But by brushing your hair regularly, you’re helping it rejuvenate, this way improving its health and strength. Synthetic brushes deserve to be chucked in the bin – while a natural bristle brush is your friend.
#4.Turn Down the Heat
If you’re someone who blow-dries their hair, especially if you do it often – turn down the heat (or skip the dryer altogether). Hot appliances will damage hair – even if you use a protective serum or any other product that’s meant to protect your hair from the heat. Try and limit yourself to only blow-drying your hair when there’s just no other option.
#5.Use Fewer Styling Products
First, they tell us to use more products to keep our hair in shape, then they tell us to use less. If you’re bamboozled – hold up! The secret to healthy hair is to use styling products in moderation. Loading your hair with products can result in product build-up, which makes your hair feel limp, dull and dry.
#6. Take a Cold Shower
You’ll be surprised to hear this, but a cold shower is a wonderful treat for your hair strands. While hot shower opens cuticles and allows shampoo and conditioner to work their magic, cold shower closes them, resulting in shinier and healthier-looking hair (as the cuticle is sealed in).
#7.Don’t Skip a Trim
Trimming your hair every 3 months or so should become a tradition. Why is trimming so important? Well, to put it simply – it helps you avoid split ends and boosts healthy hair growth.
#8.Use a Clarifying Shampoo
A clarifying shampoo is often also called a ‘detox’ shampoo – and that’s a pretty good indicator of what it does. Why use it? It helps get rid of product build-up, particularly chlorine that ends up on your hair strands if you’re a frequent guest at the pool.
#9. Protect Your Hair When in the Pool
If you’re a swimming enthusiast, then you may need more help than just a clarifying shampoo. Chlorine is like an evil stepmother for hair – and you’ll want to do all you can to protect it. There are a few things you can do to lessen the damage, such as, for example, wetting your hair with non-chlorine water before you step into the pool. Plus – a swimming cap goes a long way.
#10. Learn to Deal with Grease
If you’re dealing with greasy hair, I feel ya. It’s difficult – and the easiest way to deal with grease seems to be to wash your hair every day. Wrong. Don’t do that – that’ll make your hair produce even more oil, only perpetuating the problem. Use a dry shampoo instead – and don’t take hot showers. They’re bad for greasy heads like ours.
